A treat to spend my birthday in St Ives, Cornwall, A treat to spend my birthday in St Ives, Cornwall, visiting the studios and sublime gardens of fellow Yorkshire-born artist Barbara Hepworth. Her openness to the mysterious powers and unpredictable forces of nature and fascination for the physicality of man in the landscape is viscerally embedded in her captivating sculptures. Intrigued to learn that she rarely produced sketches or maquettes to explore her initial ideas, preferring to make full size working models in plaster that she could carve and chisel to produce prototypes, sometimes in pieces according to the limitations of scale of her studio spaces. These magnificent plaster forms were then taken to the foundry to make moulds for vast bronze casts such as 6.5m high Single Form 1964, commissioned for the UN building in New York - scroll through to see her working on the prototype on the floor of the old Palais de Danse (currently closed but empty awaiting funds to refurbish) adjacent to her studios in St Ives. Great Hepworth show currently on at nearby Tate St Ives too. Thank you @annasolowij ❤️#inspirationalwomen #studioenvy #architecture #stives #tatestives #barbarahepworth

Road transportation in Rajasthan comes in many exotic and colourful forms - the last photo is an unlikely vehicle unique to the countryside in this region - called a Zoogard the farmers create these extraordinary assemblages using 4 wheels on a lashed together wooden chassis with the water pump from the land used as a makeshift engine. Discovered this cosmic architectural wonder built Discovered this cosmic architectural wonder built in 1734 by Maharajah Jai Singh II in the heart of Jaipur. Its form contrasts starkly with the richly ornate Mogul marble buildings of that time. These vast abstract observatory structures were motivated by the king’s passion for worldly power through knowledge of the celestial order by mapping the skies. These peculiar monolithic forms also include a gigantic sundial, the Samrat Yantra whose staircase gnomon casts a sharp shadow that moves along the swooping marble calibrated quadrant arc - this ancient instrument remarkably tells the local time accurately within 2 seconds. No surprise to learn that this eighteenth century observatory with its unlikely and alluring shapes served as inspiration for Le Corbusier when he designed the parliament building at Chandigarh in 1957
