A treat to spend my birthday in St Ives, Cornwall, A treat to spend my birthday in St Ives, Cornwall, visiting the studios and sublime gardens of fellow Yorkshire-born artist Barbara Hepworth. Her openness to the mysterious powers and unpredictable forces of nature and fascination for the physicality of man in the landscape is viscerally embedded in her captivating sculptures. Intrigued to learn that she rarely produced sketches or maquettes to explore her initial ideas, preferring to make full size working models in plaster that she could carve and chisel to produce prototypes, sometimes in pieces according to the limitations of scale of her studio spaces. These magnificent plaster forms were then taken to the foundry to make moulds for vast bronze casts such as 6.5m high Single Form 1964, commissioned for the UN building in New York - scroll through to see her working on the prototype on the floor of the old Palais de Danse (currently closed but empty awaiting funds to refurbish) adjacent to her studios in St Ives. Great Hepworth show currently on at nearby Tate St Ives too. Thank you @annasolowij ❤️#inspirationalwomen #studioenvy #architecture #stives #tatestives #barbarahepworth
