25km from Guatemala City is the colourful little town of Antigua surrounded by some active volcanoes which snort plumes of smoke and fiery lava. Took to its walkable cobbled streets, Guatemalan chocolate and coffee shops and small scale buildings with my fab guide @bindy_viviana - what a total contrast to the pollution and constant traffic noise of the city. The architecture is a fascinating collision of 17th century Spanish Baroque (catholic carvings and details) reinterpreted by Mayan builders (Sun and Moon worshipers with symbols of serpents and maize and coffee appearing on the facades) #antiguaguatemala #architecture #mayan @catedrajorgemontes ...

Im in Guatemala City thanks to @catedrajorgemontes who invited me to speak and teach at the university here. What an adventure - magical week of volcanoes, partying, police protection and modernist gems such as this - their National Theatre… designed in the sixties by hippy maverick engineer #efrainrecinos this mosaic madness of swooping curves punctuated by nostril windows seems to sing and dance from the hilltop. I have discovered a new architectural hero for sure - this genius expressionist building somehow manages to capture the warm-hearted fun-loving Latino spirit of the Guatemalan people I have met.
